Our Story in Paint: From Beginnings to the Present Day
The Expanded Metal Company has unveiled a new mural that transforms the walls of its Hartlepool mill into their visual story. Stretching an impressive 53 metres in length and 2.5 metres high, the artwork brings new energy into the workspace all while celebrating the company’s long-standing connection to Hartlepool.
The mural was created by local artists Grimesz Lockwood and Lily Rose Cockfield, with input from employees across the business. The mural tells a powerful story through colour, creativity and storytelling, it reflects what has defined The Expanded Metal Company since 1889.
“We wanted to create something that truly reflects who we are, and this mural does exactly that. It brings our story to life in a way that feels authentic, from our early heritage to where we are heading.”
Philip Astley, Managing Director of The Expanded Metal Company
The mural takes viewers on a journey through time, from Hartlepool’s industrial beginnings to the modern workplace we know today. It captures moments of change and progress, reflecting both the town’s history and The Expanded Metal Company’s evolution within it.
Across the wall, scenes of industry, community and innovation blend together, showing how people, place and purpose have always been at the heart of our story. As the design moves into the present day, it highlights how heritage and modern technology work hand in hand, celebrating the creativity, skill and teamwork that continue to drive the business forward.
The mural ends where the future begins. It’s a reminder that progress never stands still and that every detail, every contribution and every person plays a part in the ongoing story of The Expanded Metal Company.
